mistakesI loathe it when i make mistakes. I sooo do not like making mistakes. Astaghfirullahal’adzim. I seek forgiveness from Allah. I will regret, i will be sad, i will wish to turn back time, i will wish that i have never done it, but above all……

And that is why, i have to painfully and hurtfully admit, mistake is indeed, THE BEST TEACHER.

We learn best by experience, not only from good, great and wonderful experiences where everything works out (as then we will tend to take things for granted, be over-confident and not be as careful or meticulous as we should be), but also from the bad experiences, the bad memories, the worst events, whether they are academical mistakes in our exams, mistakes in our professional worklife, mistakes in dakwah, mistakes in relationships, insensitive to our surroundings, forget important details or simply done things half-heartedly and later produce undesirable outcomes.

I made a lot of mistakes, i carelessly answered all questions in my exam causing me to run out of time when i actually should answer only 5 out of 7 q’s, mistakes in dakwah when i said inappropriate things at inappropriate time and made people ran away, forgot to feed my cat and made her very sick, and many more serious mistakes that only Allah knows. But inshaAllah, i learn from them. I hope i do. Please do. .

Whether we like it or not, we actually learn most when things go wrong, when situations go against us or when there are disastrous outcomes. It is then only we will start realizing our mistakes, our false actions, our incorrect assumptions and more importantly, our carelessness! We will then truly analyze the cause of the catastrophe, what should and should not be said or done. Provided we do not give up and loose hope,

mistakes will in fact, push us forward, not backward. Believe it.

Yes, it will be painful, with many displeasing consequences, but the best lesson is often the one learned the hard way. ‘No pain no gain’, they say.

The companions of the Prophet learnt valuable lessons when they lost badly in the Battle of Uhud causing Rasulullah s.a.w. to be severely injured and almost cost him his life, and 70 beloved companions to be martyred, including Hamzah Abd Muttalib and Mus’ab b Umair. This brought enormous grief to the Muslims, but with very important lessons learnt – never to disobey the Prophet in any condition & never be over-confident just because they are carrying Islam, the true religion. (refer Hazad Deen by Syed Qutb)

(Al-A’raf : ayat 23)

oopsSometimes mistakes occur repetitively, again and again. When this happens, i often thought “That’s it. My world is coming to an end. I can’t find a way out of this mess”. However, when same mistakes are made twice, it just shows that we haven’t learn enough from the past. It also signifies that we are ignorant or insensitive to certain aspects of the previous mistakes. Ideally, we should not fall into the same hole twice! Pisang tidak patut berbuah 2 kali,3 kali,4 kali dan 5 kali. No. But if it happens, it happens for a reason. A good reason. There must be something Allah intends to teach us. And by making mistakes, in reality, we are improving ourself when we take note of it, we are better trained at it, getting better and better each time, although perhaps in a very distressing way. Bear with it. It is after all, our mistakes.

If we always and always succeed, every single time, facing very little hardships, it is much feared that we may become astray from the path of Allah, the element of tawakkal maybe lost from our hearts and the feeling of self-sufficient may grow. Tawakkal cannot be learnt from anyone or from any kitab, it has to be lived. And we will truly understand what it really means to Tawakkal, only when there is completely no way out, nothing that we can do. Remember during exam seasons, especially when we have done badly in our papers, our tawakkal was sky high, tears decorated our extra long sujud in the prayers and we were much much closer to Allah. Success is indeed, a huge test of imaan from Allah. If we do not give thanks to Allah, if we forget our Syukur, we are standing on a dangerous ground just when we thought we are safe & sound! Allah has warn us in His revelation:

“Bermegah-megahan telah melalaikanmu.” (At-takathur : ayat 1)

Personally, from deep inside, i make Doa for Allah to give patience to all my sisters and brothers out there. Do not be put off by mistakes. Do not give up and do not loose hope. And i say this to myself especially. May Allah give strength, give patience, guidance, courage and a willing heart. InshaAllah. And may Allah forgive our mistakes on the Judgement Day.

“Wahai orang-orang beriman, mintalah pertolongan (Allah) dengan sabar dan solat, sesungguhnya Allah beserta orang-orang yang sabar.”  (Al-Baqarah:ayat 153)
